HistoryVilla Terrace was built to look like the Italian architectural master piece, Villa Cicogna Mozzoni. Built in 1923 and designed by architect David Alder, the house was built with Illinois brick painted white on a concrete foundation. The house was built for Loyd Smith and his family. Loyd Smith was the son of Arthur Oliver, whose father founded A.O. Smith company. After Loyd's father died in 1913, he took over the company. His plans were delayed in 1915 when he had to make supplies for the war effort, but it ended up being a great thing for him as he made tons of money. In 1923 he decided that he wanted to make a home that mirrored his success in his company and his own creativity. Villa Terrace is now a decorative arts museum. You can also rent out rooms for your own use.

Renaissance architecture puts significance on symmetry, proportion, geometry, like the way it would be on ancient Roman architecture. Neatly arranged columns, pilasters, lintels, semicircular arches, hemispherical domes, niches, and aedicules make the it different from medieval buildings.

The North Point Neighborhood
The North Point neighborhood is full of intricately designed homes, historic buildings, and beautiful views of Lake Michigan. The North Point neighborhood has been divided into five historic districts. There are over 1000 homes and buildings listed on the national register of historic places in the North Point neighborhood. There are almost 400 homes built mostly of brick and stone. Most of the houses have many fire places, library's, and maids quarters. The neighborhood's popularity began at the end of the Victorian era, so most homes are English Tudor, French, Georgian, German, and Mediterranean renaissance.
History:
Many people believed that a wave of prosperity was coming to the North Point neighborhood. In 1856, John Lockwood built a bountiful mansion in the historic district of North Point South. However, the majority of building was 40 years later. Lockwood left in 1863 and the home was demolished in 1880's. Though housing was not a big part of early North Point, the city of Milwaukee purchased a 40 acre area in North Point, and a poor house was constructed, and soon after a pest house was made, for people that had infectious diseases. Then in 1858, the Sisters of Charity moved there and created St. Mary's hospital. In the late 1800's a school, Protestant, Catholic homes for for older people and an orphanage. Another significant piece of North Point's original history is the North Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1855, with the purpose of providing light to the mariners that Milwaukee's economy was so dependent on. In 1871 a water tower was built (Which is why the North Point neighborhood is also called the water tower district). In 1890 lake park, a 120 acre bluff side park, was added to North Point. Finally in the 1890's, all of the lots in the Prospect avenue neighborhood had mostly been bought, and the building of elaborate homes in North Point began. By 1930, almost all of the lots had been bought and built upon. Today's North point is mostly the same with very few homes having been turned into apartments.
